What Is an SR-22?
High Risk Auto Insurance for DUI, SR22, DWI, Distracted Drivers, Teens, & More.
The term high risk can be used in different ways. Sometimes it refers to one driver being a higher risk than another.
It can also be used in reference to a driver not eligible for insurance through a preferred carrier.
In the United States, an SR-22 or a (certificate of Insurance or a financial responsibilty filing), is a vehicle liability
insurance document required by most state DMV locations, for HIGH Risk insurance policies.
A DMV may require an SR-22 from a driver to reinstate his/her driving privleges following an uninsured car accident
or conviction of another traffic-related offense, like a DUI. An SR-22 may be required by the driver for 3 years for a conviction
of driving without insurance or driving with a suspended license and possibly up to 5 years for a DUI. If your SR-22 would
expire or be cancelled, the insurance company is requried to issue a SR-26 form which certifies the cancellation of the policy.
Some states may accept an SR-22 as an alternative to a deposit in cash as proof of financial responsiblity.
